When I see a beautiful house like this, my mind places it almost immediately in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, North California) or Australia. Planchonella House was built in the latter by architect Jesse Bennett as a joyful space to inspire and enrich daily life for him and his family.
As Mr Bennett puts it himself: “The design is inspired by the surrounding world heritage rainforest and tropical climate. We wanted to create a dwelling that enabled the occupants to live simply in the landscape.”
Built on a hill surrounded by a rainforest, the challenge was to connect to the environment without obstruction and hence the high concrete ceilings and light-filled, ventilated spaces.
Following the idea of “simple living”, the materials used are not many and help to create a practical and minimalist design: in order to add warmth and coziness, one type of hardwood was applied to the predominantly concrete and glass structure.
As the Team Yellowtrace perfectly puts it, the “L” shape arrangement “allows flexibility for a growing family, promoting visual connection and activity through the house, whilst allowing privacy.”
